Financial technology (fintech) has moved from the periphery of financial services to the core of banking strategies. Digital payments, neobanks, open banking, embedded finance, artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain and regulatory technology (RegTech) are reshaping how financial services are designed, delivered and consumed. These innovations create new opportunities for banks in terms of efficiency, financial inclusion, customer experience and new revenue models, but also pose significant threats such as disintermediation, cyber risk, regulatory complexity, margin compression and heightened competition from agile fintech firms and big tech platforms. This paper provides a conceptual and analytical study of key fintech innovations and their implications for the future of banking. It draws on recent industry reports, academic literature and global trend analyses to examine how banks can leverage fintech as a strategic enabler while mitigating associated risks. The paper concludes that the future of banking will be hybrid— characterised by platform-based ecosystems, collaborative models between banks and fintechs, data-driven personalization and stronger regulatory and risk management frameworks.
